One group of students I worked with was struggling to respond to what they had read, as well as having difficulty in retelling the order of the story. In response to their need, I designed a response project in which the students illustrated captions from a story, then put the captions in order that the story took place. They reread the story several times in the process of illustration, which increased their retelling when it was time for ordering the stories. We also learned about how illustrators decide what to illustrate in order to assist the reader in their reading.
