Setting
up a xoom.com website is an excellent test bed for your website projects.
- You
can see how the website operates in an online environment before moving
it to your permanent server.
- You
can test new webpage design schemes and website management strategies
without the risk of damaging your existing website structures.
- You
can use xoom.com to host temporary student projects without using
valuable server space (just create a link from your website to the
xoom site)
Here's
how to set up a Xoom.com website.
1. Connect
to http://www.xoom.com
2. Click on the Join Now button
3. Click on the Unlimited Webspace button
4. Enter your e-mail address in the dialog box. (Note: Xoom allows one
website per e-mail address. If you have already created a xoom account,
you can create a new e-mail address on a free web-based e-mail service
like Hotmail http://www.hotmail.com,
Eudoramail http://www.eudoramail.com,
etc. and use that address to create additional xoom.com accounts.
5. Click on Next.
6. Enter the website name that will follow the http://members.xoom.com/
portion of your URL. (Hint: use lowercase letters with no spaces and
keep the name as short as possible).
7. Enter a password (Hint: be sure to write this down for future reference
or you won't be able to administer your website!)
8. Enter your name (or a project name)
9. Enter your state and zip code.
10. Indicate if you want to participate in the xoom points program
11. Hint: Print a copy of the webpage and file it away for future reference.
12. Click on the "Click Here and Then Wait" button.
13. Decide if you want to disclose the information on the Optional Information
page that appears next. Note: This information is optional and will
likely be used for target advertising banners that will appear on your
webpages and may result in mail sent to your address

14. Click on the "Click Here to Continue" button at the bottom
of the page.
15. Decide if you want to accept any of the trial magazine subscriptions
again, the choice is yours
Just check the "No, don't send
me any magazines" button if you don't want to avail yourself of
the offers.
16. Click on "Continue with the Sign-up Process"
17. A screen will appear informing you that your website has been created.
18. An e-mail message will be sent to the address that you entered on
the first screen with information on how to activate your account.
19. Close your web browser and check your e-mail to retrieve that message
now.
20. Hint: Print the message and file it away for future reference
21. Click on the Validate URL address found in the message (or copy
and paste the address into your web browser location box if your e-mail
does not support live URL links.
22. Read the Xoom.com Terms of Service Policy and click on the "Click
here once you've read and agree to abide by this Terms of Service"
link at the top or bottom of the webpage.
23. Enter your Member Name and the Password you selected earlier (hint:
can be found on the e-mail message you received a few minutes ago).
24. A new screen will appear informing you that your website has been
created.
25. Print this screen as it has important FTP (file transfer) information
that you will need to upload webpages to your website.
26. Click on the link to "Member Services Web Space Management"
to retrieve more important information.
27. You are most interested in the details in the FTP Access section
since you will be using this with your FTP application (WS_FTP or Fetch)
to upload your webpages to the website and create your website directories.

29. Click on the Home Page Help Center link.
30. Click on the links to Tutorials on the left side of the screen to
load the specific tutorials.
31. You will find links to download the FTP application if you do not
already have that installed on your computer.
