Preliminary Assessment of Web Searching Skills

Before we begin the course, I would like you to complete a preliminary web search activity that will help me evaluate your baseline web searching skills.

Here’s the topic:

"What was the relationship between guta percha and the first transatlantic telegraph cable?"

Note: One of the words above has been deliberately misspelled…

Use any of the web search tools you have at your disposal. In this preliminary activity, the process is more important than the product. Conduct your web search.

Send the instructor a short e-mail message titled TEC 3012 preliminary assessment. List the web search tools that you selected and describe how you found (or didn’t find) the answer to the question. Send me the URL (internet address) of a webpage that contains the answer.

This concludes the activities of the first module of the course.  In the second module you will explore some background information that will help you better understand the World Wide Web.  Click on the Background Information link on the left side of this webpage when you are ready to continue.
