Locating a text editor on your computer

There will be times when you will find it useful to have a simple text editor such as NotePad (for windows users) and SimpleText (for mac users) open on the screen along with the Netscape web browser. Easy access to an open text editor will allow you to cut and paste URL’s (internet addresses) as well as text from the browser window into the text editor. You can also make onscreen notes to document the search process. Here’s how to locate the text editor on your computer if you don’t already know where it is:

Windows 95/98/ME/2000/XP Users:

Notepad is located in the Accessories list in Windows.

Click on Start

Click on Programs

Click on Accessories

Click on Notepad.

Windows users can create a desktop shortcut for Notepad with the following procedure.

Click on My Computer.

Double-Click on the C: drive icon

Double-click on the Windows directory

Scroll across the window until you find the Notepad icon.

Click once on the icon to select it,

From the File menu, select Create Shortcut.

A shortcut to Notepad will appear in the directory.

Hold down the mouse button while you drag this shortcut to the desktop.

Notepad will now be accessible at any time simply by double clicking the Notepad shortcut icon.

Mac Users:

Select Find from the File menu and type the word SimpleText in the box (use a capital S and T and don’t leave a space between the words!) and hit the Return key.

Note where SimpleText is located on your computer.

It is useful to have an alias for SimpleText on your desktop

To create an alias for SimpleText, click once on the SimpleText program icon.

Select Make Alias from the File menu.

When the SimpleText alias appears on the screen, hold down the mouse button while you drag the alias to the desktop.

Now you can open SimpleText at any time by simply clicking on the alias.
