Transforming Netscape Bookmarks Into Webpages (PC and Mac)

  1. Before you start the conversion process, check to see that you have created a "web" directory / folder on your hard disk.
  2. Open the Netscape Edit Bookmarks window (Ctrl-B or Command-B).
  3. Navigate to the File menu.
  4. Select Save As.
  5. When the Save As dialog box appears, select the "web" folder/directory that you created on your hard disk as the destination for the file.
  6. Now, change the default Bookmarks file name to web1.htm (Note: you can use a different file name as long as it has all lowercase letters, is five letters or less and has the .htm suffix.)
  7. Save the renamed bookmarks file.

Tech Talk: Netscape saves all its bookmarks as webpages deep within its directories. You have just taken this webpage, renamed it with an acceptable short webpage file name and added the .htm which will identify the file as a webpage when it is opened with a web browser.

  8. Navigate to the location where you saved the web1.htm file and open it with Netscape. You should see your entire Bookmarks file displayed as a webpage on your screen. Clicking on the links should take you to the associated webpage.
  9. You will notice that this process exported your entire Bookmarks list. If you are using Netscape Communicator versions 4 or 6, you can use Netscape Composer to edit the webpage, removing the folders and bookmarks that you do not wish to include.
  10. With your bookmarks page displayed on the screen, click on the File menu and select Edit Page.
  11. Netscape Composer, a simple webpage editing tool, will open in a new window.
  12. Select and delete the portions of the webpage that you do not wish to keep.
  13. Save the page and close Netscape Composer.
  14. Click on the Reload button on the web browser to reload the edited version of your exported bookmarks list.
  15. You can add this webpage to your bookmarks list just like any other webpage you might find on the web. You can even make it your Netscape Homepage.

That’s all there is to it… I have found bookmark lists transformed into webpages to be very useful. In fact, all of the link webpages that you have been using for this course started out as bookmark lists that I created while I was researching and developing the course.
