Transforming Internet Explorer Favorites Into Webpages (Mac versions 4 and 5)

  1. Before you start the conversion process, double-check that you have created a "web" directory/folder on your hard disk.
  2. Open Internet Explorer.
  3. Open the Organize Favorites window.
  4. Navigate to the File menu.
  5. Select Export or Export Favorites.
  6. When the dialog box appears, select the "web" folder/directory on your hard disk as the destination for the file.
  7. Now, change the default favorites.html  file name to web1.htm (Note: you can use a different file name as long as it has all lowercase letters, is five letters or less and includes the .htm suffix.)
  8. Save the renamed favorites file.

Tech Talk: The Mac version of Internet Explorer saves all its favorites as webpages deep within its directories. You have just taken this webpage, renamed it with an acceptable short webpage file name and added the .htm which will identify the file as a webpage when it is opened with a web browser.

  9. Navigate to the location where you saved the web1.htm file and open it. You should see your entire Bookmarks file displayed as a webpage on your screen. Clicking on the links should take you to the associated webpage.
  10. You will notice that this process exported your entire Favorites list. If you have access to an HTML editor like Netscape Composer or if your word processor is capable of editing webpages, you can edit the webpage, removing the folders and bookmarks that you do not wish to include.

That’s all there is to it… I have found favorites lists transformed into webpages to be very helpful. In fact, all of the link webpages that you have been using for this course started out as bookmarks / favorites lists that I created while I was researching and developing the course.
