Session 3:
Working On Your Classroom Web Publishing Projects
- One computer model - students access and edit their individual website from the folder / directory on the hard drive of the classroom computer
- Multiple computer model - create "mirror" copies of the class website on multiple computers. When the individual student websites are completed, copy them back into the folder / directory on the computer than contains the "master" class website folder.
- Floppy disk model - copy each individual student website to a separate floppy disk. Students work from the floppy disk to complete their website. Upon completion, the website folder from the floppy disk is copied back into the "master" class website folder.
Publishing Your Class Website
- School or District Web Server - contact your school or district "web guru" for specific instructions on how to upload your class website to the school or district server.
- Personal or Classroom web server account - If you have an account with an Internet Service Provider, you most likely have access to 5-20 MB of web server space where you can "host" the website. Contact your ISP for details on how to upload the website.
- Free website hosting services - Many companies will "host" your website at no charge in exchange for a discreet banner ad on the top of your webpages. Xoom.com http://www.xoom.com and Geocities.com http://www.geocities.com are two examples. Yahoo maintains a directory of many other free web hosting options.
- Intranet Servers - If you have only one computer in your classroom, it can, without modification, serve as the "local server" to display your class website. If you classroom computers are networked, it may be possible to designate one computer on your network as a "webserver" that can host your classroom website on your local network. Windows 98 Second Edition and Mac OS 9 have that feature built into the software. Free or inexpensive web server software can be downloaded and installed on one computer if necessary. See the course website for details. Be sure to check with your local network guru before installing software or reconfiguring networked comuters.
Session 3 Project: Create and Upload a Sample Class Website to both an intranet server and a online web server.
